Overview

Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is a very potent and addictive narcotic analgesic that is generally prescribed to patients who are suffering from severe pain that cannot be controlled by other, less potent painkillers. This drug is also used for the relief of both acute and chronic pain caused by cancer. It is frequently given to patients preoperatively and postoperatively for relief of moderate to severe pain. The drug may be used in addition to other narcotic analgesic agents where needed for adequate pain management. Children who are given Dilaudid may become dependent on it if they continue taking it after its original prescription has run out.
